Break the Cycle of Procrastination

I like to delay, rationalize, just plain make excuses for not doing things. Even when I know that I’m procrastinating I still do it.

In this WebMD article, William Knaus, EdD, a professor at American International College in Springfield, Mass., talks about procrastination and WHY we do it.

According to WebMD, procrastination can also be born of disorganization or forgetfulness. Some procrastinators are perfectionists. They don’t want to do something if they can’t do it perfectly. Even though a desire to not leave things hanging is also a trait of being a perfectionist, these types of people often let tasks pile up because they cannot do them perfectly in the time allotted.

Some suggestions for breaking the procrastination habit:

Thirteen Tricks to Motivate Yourself

A lack of motivation coupled with procrastination is the deadly combo that we all have to deal with when we’re trying to accomplish our goals.

Scott Young gives us 13tricks to motivate ourselves.

  1. Go Back to “Why” - Focusing on a dull task doesn’t make it any more attractive.
  2. Go for Five - Start working for five minutes. Often that little push will be enough to get you going.
  3. Move Around - Get your body moving as you would if you were extremely motivated to do something.
  4. Find the Next Step - Chunk it up so that it becomes manageable.
  5. Find Your Itch - What is keeping you from working. Don’t let the itch continue without isolating it and removing the problem.
  6. Deconstruct Your Fears - Hidden fears or anxieties can keep you from getting real work completed.
  7. Get a Partner - Find someone who will motivate you when you’re feeling lazy.
  8. Kickstart Your Day - Building momentum early in the day can usually carry you forward far later.
  9. Read Books - Not just self-help or motivational books, but any book that has new ideas.
  10. Get the Right Tools - Your environment can have a profound effect on your enthusiasm.
  11. There are No Small Problems - The worst killer of motivation is facing a seemingly small problem that creates endless frustration.
  12. Develop a Mantra - Find a few statements that focus your mind and motivate you.
  13. Build on Success - Success creates success. When you’ve just won, it is easy to feel motivated about almost anything.
